Today, a restless perfectionist tries to remake the world in his own image. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For 18 years, Craig Frazier worked as a graphic designer, producing trademarks, brochures, annual reports, packaging, posters and advertising. He had bustling offices in the San Francisco Design Center, a staff of six, a client list which included companies like Apple, Herman Miller, Nestle, Steelcase, LucasArts, Oracle and Kia Motors. His award-winning work was regularly featured in the best design magazines, and acquired for the permanent collection of the San &lt;br /&gt;Francisco Museum of Modern Art. And then, five years ago, Frazier threw it all away. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A visitor to his studio today finds a small office upstairs above Peet's Coffee in the quiet town of Mill Valley, California. There is one assistant; a drafting table the size of an aircraft carrier; computers; a well-stocked library; and, sitting against one wall, a Yamaha guitar which he rarely has time to play. Frazier didn't just downsize, however. He completely switched &lt;br /&gt;professions. At the peak of his professional career, he chose to start anew. Without any guarantees, without any steady source of income-and with a wife and two children at home depending on him-he decided to follow his heart. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fortunately, his career switch hasn't hurt his record of success. As an illustrator, his client roster now includes publications like The New York Times, Business Week, Time, Harvard Business Review and The Wall Street Journal, as well as corporate clients like Adobe, Chevrolet, Invesco Funds, the US Postal Service and United Airlines. He is a perennial in American Illustration and the Society of Illustrators Annual. This is a man who has the rare distinction of having conquered not one profession, but two. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Frazier grew up in a military family, changing schools every year or two; this, perhaps, gave him his outsider's perspective. At college in Northern California, he studied psychology until he realized he was more interested in persuading people than understanding them, and switched to the Department of Communication Design. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When he graduated, he wanted to be an illustrator. He held a romantic view of what it would be like to spend every day thinking and drawing; the view, he says, has turned out to be about 70 percent true. "When I was daydreaming about what it would be like I didn't include all the business aspects," he says, "but the rest of it is just the way I pictured it." It took him a long time to get there, however, because upon graduation he was advised that he was a better designer than illustrator, and so he got his first job in a design firm. Ironically, they hired him because he could draw. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Graphic design is anonymous; the best designers create a voice for their clients, not themselves. This is one key to why he made the switch to illustration. As he says, after 20 years of working, he 11 couldn't find the Craig" in the design work he was doing. He also found he was spending little of his time designing and most of his time defending, explaining, selling. &lt;br /&gt;Another key is that design was too slow for him. He now enjoys the instant gratification of getting to practice his craft every day, and likes the fact that he spends his workday doing what he calls "very impatient work." It suits him. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;About two years before making the transition, he started working at night on his illustration portfolio. Then, for three of the brochures he was working on at the office, he hired himself as the illustrator (for the first brochure, he didn't inform the client until after the printed piece was finished). Quickly, he realized he was having a lot more fun at his night job than at his day job. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A long time ago, Frazier wrote something about graphic design which is just as relevant to his current illustration work: "Visual impressions go from the eyes to the mind to the heart-the good stuff goes at the speed of light." Many of the principles he developed as a designer have found a natural extension in his drawings: he still believes in truthfulness, boldness and clarity. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;His experience making trademarks and posters has pointed him towards graphic simplicity. "What he's really good at," says Peter Buchanan-Smith, art director of the Op-Ed page of The New York Times and a regular client, "is telling a whole story in one frame. I'm intrigued with his background as a designer. One of the weaknesses with some illustrators is that they may be &lt;br /&gt;right-on conceptually but they don't always understand how their piece fits in the bigger picture, how it will work on the page. Craig does. He's conceptually strong but with a graphic quality that really ups the ante." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The conceptual strength stems from his approach. He isn't drawing for the sake of drawing or making messages. He is looking to pare something down to its essence. Another client, Malcolm Frouman, art director of Business Week, says "[Frazier is] very smart-he'll take complicated subject matter and reduce it down to a simple compelling, thoughtful image. He's also very imaginative. we give him fairly esoteric subject matter to deal with; he's very facile with concepts and he solves problems very quickly, which for a weekly magazine is a great virtue. When we work with him we often have the luxury of choosing from a number of terrific images." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He works on his sketches in the mornings, either at his desk, or, if that fails, sitting in a nearby restaurant where he knows the owner and won't be disturbed. He feels like he needs to solve the problem really early on, in the sketch phase-the stressful part is "sizing up the enemy, coming up with the idea." Once a sketch is approved, he's home free; he spends his afternoons cutting Amberlith, scanning the image, adding color. It's the ultimate in direct creativity, a graphic exercise that's playful and fun. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Play is the important part of understanding his work. Frazier thinks his kids-in fact, most kids-are better artists than he is. He respects their untarnished child's view, and believes they see both reality and fantasy more clearly than adults. "They haven't closed down the aperture on the way they see things. They don't know yet that you can't walk on the ceiling, so they just draw it. And they draw it without worrying about how to draw it, yet it communicates." He still often shows sketches to his kids to find out if they "get it." Asked about his influences, he mentions Folon and Guy Billout, illustrators who create visual riddles. He looks at their work, he says, to be transported--to participate, to solve the puzzle, and be able to say, "I got it!" &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In his work, Frazier tries to create something that is interactive, that engages the viewer, something that is memorable. He does a lot of drawings; sometimes the sketches themselves seem to suggest something new, a happy accident or a collision of concepts. He is looking for metaphors. "When you show someone there's another way to see things, they're at a &lt;br /&gt;disadvantage-they have to listen to you, at least for a moment," he says. Yet while he is very serious about his work, it doesn't come out that way. Kit Hinrichs, partner at Pentagram Design, talks about Frazier's great visual wit. "His work is just like the man: charming, whimsical, with a lot of energy. His humor always comes through." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And so we turn to the work itself. Almost every piece asks the viewer a puzzling question: Are those arrows or are those men? Are those the scales of justice, or sailboats? Is that a wall or is it an ocean? Even a magician is forced to reveal his tricks: we see the man inside the black hat, struggling to manipulate the rabbit ears. Things are, indeed, not what they seem. &lt;br /&gt;In fact, when you look closer, you see that each drawing has the logic of a little animated movie: as you watch, a gopher hole turns into a pail of water, or a landscape dissolves into a man's vest. So it should come as no surprise that this restless artist has begun to experiment with short animated films and is actively seeking clients who will use his moving imagery for &lt;br /&gt;television or web advertising. Animation, after all, is all about transformations, shapes shifting, one thing becoming another. Something like watching a designer turn into an illustrator. Frazier isn't resting on his laurels. He would like to do children's books, stage sets, music videos, movies. In some ways, he would like to "Craig Frazier-ize" the whole world. He has a &lt;br /&gt;million ideas, and as he says, he is always more interested in getting on to the next idea than going back and fiddling with the one he just completed. But a question naturally arises: as he works on each piece, how does he know when to put it down? How does he know when to stop? "Oh, I always know when something's done," he says. "When the piece talks, it's &lt;br /&gt;finished." Then, after a pause, he smiles. "Hopefully, by deadline." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Copyright Graphis Inc. type='text'>다시 새로운 것을 한다는 것.</title><content type='html'>때때로 말을 해야 겠다고 생각하지만 말하기가 더욱 어려워진다.&lt;br /&gt;금방 뱉어 버린 말을 후회하게 될 거라고 생각하기에 말이다.&lt;br /&gt;또 정말 후회한다. &lt;br /&gt;점점 무언가를 알아가면서 말하기는 더욱 힘들어지는 것 같다. 아, 그것은 아무것도 확실히 아는 것이 없기 때문이겠지.&lt;br /&gt;그래서,&lt;br /&gt;쉽게 이야기를 늘어 놓는 사람들을 보면 그 용기에 감복한다.&lt;br /&gt;그들을 보면 나도 무언가 이야기 하고 싶은.&lt;br /&gt;그래서 말보다 이미지가 더 좋게 여겨지나? 나에겐?&lt;br /&gt;이미지를 던진다면... 시간이 type='text'>도서관</title><content type='html'>도서관은 욕심의 장소, 분노의 장소였다. 도서관에 가면 묘한 흥분과 함께 인 생은 짧아지고 시간은 급격히 빨리 흘렀다. 그 시절, 난 도서관의 사서와 다 름없이 분주하기만 했다. 그 한장 한장 속의 낱낱 거리 생각을 알아내려 고심 하기 보단 내 속에 숨겨둔 도서목록 상자를 조금이라도 더 채우려고 바둥 거 리기만 했단 말이다. 훗. 그때의 서지목록을 지금 얼마나 기억하고 있는지. 네, 잘아시지 않나요? 저는 노력파 아닙니까? &lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt; 그래서 그런 주장을 하고 다녔나 보다. 정보들이 어떤 뭉개구름 같은 이미지 로 남아 저장된다는. 기억력이 나쁘다고 그냥 할 것이지. &lt;br&gt; 당신이 만약 어떤 소설을 한 권 아주 감명깊게 읽었다 치자. 당신의 기억력에 따라 제법 그 구석구석을 오래히 기억할 지도 모른다. 하지만 결국 잊어 버리 고 말 걸. &lt;br&gt; 최종적으로 당신이 그 소설에 대해 기억하는 것은 무엇일까. 당신은 그것을 읽었다는 사실은 안다. 물론 대강의 줄거리도 기억해 낼 수 있을 것이다. 하 지만 가장 정확한 기억은 머리가 아니라 가슴에서 나오는 것이 아닐까? 그 소 설에 대한 느낌. 당신은 그 소설의 제목을 듣는 순간, 거기에 나온 주인공의 이름 따위 보다 제일 먼저 어떤 감정이 떠오를 것이다. 그 소설이 전해 주던 느낌. 그 이름을 들으면 떠오르는 어떤 기분. &lt;br&gt; 음. 역시 당신은 그 느낌의 존재와 성격을 제대로 나에게 설명해 주기 어렵 다. 당연하지. 당신도 노력파인 걸. &lt;br&gt; 우리는 느낌으로 기억한다. 이미지로. 뭉개뭉개... &lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt; 이젠 더 이상 도서관에 자주 가지 않는다. 당연하지. 너무 멀잖아! &lt;br&gt; 지금 두드려지고 있는 작고 귀여운 하얀 기계가 그 역할을 대신해 주고 있다. 좀 더 흘끗 흘끗 볼 수 있게 해주니, 예전 보단 시간이 좀 덜 빠르게 흐르는 것 같다. 대신에 그 규모를 가늠하기 어려운데, 보이질 않으니 욕심이 그렇게 크지는 않다. 그렇다. 검색을 해서는 안된다. 많은 것이 보이면 많은 욕심이 들고 다시 시간도 빠르게 흐르고 나는 더 빨리 늙어 버릴 것이다! &lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img
